While I normally love planning a cruise almost as much as the cruise itself, my regular pre-cruise excitement was tainted with worry that we’d miss the boat. If you do elect to fly in the day of, be sure to buy travel insurance that will cover the cost of any possible delays. I’d advise against booking insurance through the cruise lines – it will be costlier and may not cover everything you need.
Technical Issue Cancels Two Port Visits for Norwegian Cruise Ship
You can dine when you like, where you like and with who you like. You are not limited to a set dining time or assigned to a group table. The ship’s plumbing seemed to be an issue occasionally. Sometimes we had issues flushing the toilet and once in the middle of the night, we didn’t have any water at all.

Guests spend two days on Maui, two days on Hawaii Island (one in Hilo, one in Kona) and one and a half days on Kauai. The 2005-built Pride of America cruise ship is operated via the brand NCL America as a unique Project America-class (one-vessel only). I still have four more days of adventure aboard Pride of America in Hawaii to go, and I'm already looking at how I can come back and do it all over again. To that end, I've found service from the ship's predominantly-American crew (with a healthy dose of international team members thrown in the mix) to be friendly and amiable. Some crewmembers are old hands at this and perform duties with ease; others are still learning but are disarmingly polite and unfailingly gracious. At one point, about three staff members were all hunting down cutlery for us when our breakfast in the Cadillac Diner came but the silverware did not.

Regular coffee, tea and ice water are generally your only “free” options, except some fruit juices at the breakfast buffet. The package we booked included a free perk of the “Hawaii Beverage Package” which included bottled water, sodas, beer, wine and mixed-drinks up to $15. A 20% service charge was applied to our package prior to the cruise. Hawaii is an outstanding destination with so much beauty and culture.

The missing utensils were finally tracked down and delivered with many apologies. A few passengers have been overheard to remark that they're on a shakedown cruise -- and they're not wrong. This is the ship's first cruise in revenue service in over two years, and Norwegian is taking a cautious approach.
What you need to know before booking a Hawaii cruise
While there is some shopping on board, it was fairly limited. This would give you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Years ago, we wrote this article — I only have one day on Kauai.
From top to bottom and from bow to stern, Pride of America has enough onboard activities to fill every minute of your cruise. Indulge in a refreshing swim at the Oasis Pool or the Miami-inspired South Beach Pool. Go for a run with the best views on the jogging track, or break a sweat at the Santa Fe Fitness Centre. And when all is said and done, enjoy a pamper session at Mandara Spa.

With dining being such a big part of most people’s expectations of cruise, we felt that Norwegian fell short. We always enjoy Hawaii regional cuisine at restaurants in Hawaii, but we didn’t find anything like that on the ship. At the Aloha Cafe on the final evening, they tried to have a “Taste of Hawaii” dinner, but it was disappointing.

Every Saturday afternoon, it sets sail from Honolulu. Within a week, the Pride of America goes to Maui, Hawaii (Big) Island, Kauai, and then returns to Honolulu for disembarkation on Saturday morning. Several bars, like the Gold Rush Saloon, Key West Sports Bar and the Waikiki Bar on Deck 13 are shuttered as well due to the lack of passengers, though all of the ship's interior bars are open for business. Most of the completely closed venues are outer-deck locations, though opening hours have been adjusted for several bars, including John Adams Coffee Bar and the Napa Wine Bar, both of which close at 10 p.m.
It’s these extras that make the difference, so if you’re an Aussie looking to experience the ultimate Hawaiian Island adventure consider booking with MyCruises.com.au. NCL changed the ship's name to "Pride of America", as well as its dimensions - tonnage (from 72,000 GT to 80,450 GT) and LOA length (from 850 ft / 260 m to 920 ft / 280 m). Delivery date was scheduled for 2004 but due to a storm damaging the vessel this happened in 2005. The US Government made an exclusive act giving a ship predominantly built in Germany a USA flag. Norwegian's Pride is the biggest cruise ship in the US register and the only USA-flagged ship home-ported in Honolulu Hawaii. The Hollywood Theatre, located on Deck 5 forward, is just one story and fairly small, with excellent sight lines.
Entertainment, including live music, has been fantastic. Old cruise standards like the Love and Marriage Show are still held onboard, as are production shows and immersive Hawaiian cultural events like lei making and Hula dancing. To that end, Pride of America is sailing well below standard double-occupancy capacity of 2,186. That means a lot more personal space for everyone onboard, though that will gradually change, too, as the weeks go on.
With so many bars and lounges to discover, finding your favourite may take a few days. Pop some bubbly and toast to the good life inside Pink's Champagne Bar. Whether you're looking to meet up with friends or make new ones, there's always an opportunity to mix it up. As would be expected, all shore excursions booked through Norwegian Cruise Line for Kona and Nawiliwili are automatically cancelled and fully refunded back to guests’ onboard accounts. There are many combinations of activities so depending on the group, a short hike and a helicopter tour may work better. On the second day, tours will not go to Hana or do sunsets because of the time constraints.
For Hawaii cruise enthusiasts, it marked the day that Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America started sailing again, after a two-year absence from the region due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Pride of America is perfectly suited for families wanting to see Hawaii together, and on our cruise we saw infants, toddlers, kids, tweens and teens setting out for the Hawaiian Islands. A huge Shuffles Card Room proved popular with families, and board games are available there and in the adjacent S.S.
We usually opted for the buffet for breakfast and there was a good variety of food. There are two sides that mirror each other so if one side feels busy, just try the other. Make sure you try the Bircher Muesli, which is a great start to the day. The NCL Pride ship was initially planned as "Project America 1". Project America was to be a class name as plans included a second 70,000 ton vessel to be built by the USA shipbuilders Litton-Ingalls. This was a US Government lavishly funded program aiming to give USA-based companies experience in building passenger ships and to list the first US-flagged ship in 5 decades.
There are some odd themes on the Pride of America, too. For example, there’s a Gold Rush Saloon, decorated in a rustic, old west, 1800s style. It really felt out of place on a ship that only circles the Hawaiian Islands. The ship has two main restaurants, Liberty and Skyline. Liberty is decorated like something out of Washington D.C.
